Women recruits training in Tamil

Friday, March 21st, 2014

The training programme for the newly-recruited 29 Tamil girls for the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) will be conducted in the Tamil language, sources said.

The new recruits started their training programme on Monday, 17 March in Mullaitivu.

At the inaugural session of the programme, Mullaitivu Security Forces Commander, Major General Jagath Dias, requested athe new recruits to join hands with the military to make the peace building process in the country a success and to be the proud members of the Sri Lanka Army’s Women Corps. (AP)

The 16-week-long training programme will be conducted entirely in Tamil as most of the recruits lack proficiency in Sinhala. Apart from the physical training, the women instructors from the SLAWC will also conduct practical sessions for the new recruits. All the recruits from the Mullattivu District, after residential training sessions are over, have the rare opportunity of serving in the same district, operating from their own homesteads.

Earlier, the Tamil women have been recruited to the Army from Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and from the East. The moves are in place to carry out recruitments in Jaffna as well, sources said.
